HP OfficeJet Pro K5400 Inkjet Printer Review
Last year I decided I needed to replace my HP inkjet printer. The printer was very old, and purchasing new ink cartridges for it cost nearly as much as a new printer. So I researched laser printers to see if they were more efficient. Then I went down to Best Buy with the intention of buying one. The salesman in the printer area told me that the HP OfficeJet Pro K5400 Inkjet Printer was more efficient than a laser printer. He didn’t have one in stock, but recommended that I buy it on their website.
I checked online for reviews and information about the HP OfficeJet Pro K5400 Inkjet Printer. It seemed that it was as economical with ink as the salesman had said. I bought the printer from HP’s website for about $100 on sale. This was only about $30 more than I would have paid for new cartridges for the old HP inkjet printer. The printer came with four ink cartridges; four color and one black. It plugs into my computer by USB 2.0, which was much faster and more convenient than my old LPT printer connection. The paper also loads from a tray on the bottom rather than from the top, which made feeding paper into the printer much easier.
I used the printer mainly to print shipping labels for my booksales on eBay and to print maps from the Internet. The first thing I noticed about my new HP OfficeJet Pro K5400 Inkjet Printer is that it was significantly faster at printing than my old printer. It also printed photographs at a much higher quality. However, when I printed photographs, they discolored very badly within a few days. I’m not sure whether this was because of the photo paper I was using or the ink from the printer.
The HP OfficeJet Pro K5400 Inkjet Printer integrates with the HP Solution Center, the software HP provides to help users manage their scanning, printing and digital camera tasks. Still, I tended to use the printer software directly rather than using the Solution Center. When I checked the HP Solution Center, I noticed that it had a “Printer Toolbox” where I could check the ink levels, printhead health and align and clean my printer cartridges. Unlike my old printer, the HP OfficeJet Pro K5400 Inkjet Printer doesn’t use a piece of paper and massive amounts of ink just to clean the printer heads. I could also print diagnostic pages from the Solution Center.
The printer software supports a wide range of printing settings, such as “Fast, Economical Printing,” “Everyday Printing,” “Photo Printing,” “Two-Sided (Duplex) Printing” and “Booklet Printing.” The HP OfficeJet Pro K5400 Inkjet Printer also has indicator lights on the unit which show which cartridges are low on ink. After about five months of use, my black ink cartridge is very low but the color cartridges are still going strong. One thing I like very much about this HP printer is that it has separate ink cartridges for each color; magenta, cyan and yellow. If you run low on ink for one color, you only have to replace that color cartridge, saving money on ink. However, I strongly recommend using the economy mode to achieve the best savings on ink cartridges.
Overall, I feel that this printer was an excellent investment. I would definitely recommend this printer for other computer users, especially if you have an HP computer.
