Compact Printer Review: HP LaserJet P2035n

Where businesses are concerned, whether big or small, print infrastructure is essential. From producing proposals to official documents and letters, having a proper printer is something any office wouldn’t dream of not having.

The HP LaserJet P2035n is a compact little monochrome laser printer aimed at small business owners. Being relatively compact, with dimensions of 365 x 368 x 256mm, this printer barely takes the footprint of a large pizza box. As such, you could probably get away with putting this on a desk. And since our review unit is the networkable option, putting this right next to a switch or a network point is simple enough to share on the network for everyone to use. Aside from 10/100 Ethernet, there’s also a USB 2.0 port for direct connection to a computer.

The front of the P2035n is simple by design, with no LCD to show you what’s going on, except for a row of symbols that look a little cryptic at first glance. Once you’ve given the manual a look through, the meaning of the symbols becomes clear. That said, it’s obvious that HP’s trying to take as much complexity away from this printer as possible, and that’s a good thing. After all, if printing is what you want, the last thing you want to be doing is trying to figure out why the printer isn’t printing in the first place.

Setting up the P2035n is laughably simple as one simply needs to connect the power and USB (or network) cable, install the drivers and off you go. One little caveat is that the driver and software installation takes about 5-10 minutes to complete, depending on how fast your PC is.

HP rates the P2035n as being able to print up to 30 pages per minute. To their credit, our own testing was pretty much spot on, coming in at 30ppm as well. Print quality was quite good for text, similar to what other laser printers have to offer. This is given the fact that there’s not really much any manufacturer can do these days to stand out in that sense. And while the printer isn’t exactly the quietest around when print jobs are running, a second or two after the last sheet comes out, the printer immediately goes silent.

Getting and replacing supplies for the P2035n is quite easy really, all you need to do is call the HP customer service line, and you’ll get a fresh toner cartridge delivered, which requires all but a simple slot-in procedure to install.
