All-In-One Printer Review: HP OfficeJet Pro 8500

Due to falling prices and the bevy of features that AiO printers offer, it only makes sense for small businesses to blow their budget on one of these devices and ditch the one-trick ponies instead.

For an all-in-one device, the HP 8500 does have a rather large footprint due to its bulky size and weight at 12.7kg, but it makes up for the hefty build by being decked out in a combination of matte and gloss black and white all around, giving the 8500 the looks of a modern tech tool.

On top of the control panel sits a 3.4-inch full touch screen color LCD screen. The controls on the display are easy on the eyes as well as on the fingers, being well spaced. The touchscreen LCD panel was responsive too, though it could have been propped up for convenient viewing.

HP claims speeds of 15 pages per minute (ppm) for monochrome printouts and up to 11 ppm for color in normal mode. In general, our tests showed that it was close to that with 14 ppm for monochrome prints, while printing in color averaged a speed of 10 ppm. These results place the speeds on par with HP’s claims and are comparable to other color inkjet printers. Add to that, the printer’s 250-sheet input tray makes it perfect for offices that print out large number of documents every day.

Positive notes aside, the 8500 exhibited a rather annoying tendency to spend at least two to three minutes recalibrating after a few print jobs here and there, as well as during initial power up. Thankfully, noise is kept to a minimum. Print quality is generally good when viewed with the naked eye, but under further inspection, there was visible distortion around the font edges. For color graphics, printouts were lacking in vibrancy and some banding was visible, while also sporting colors that weren’t as saturated as we’d have liked.

It seems that Wi-Fi connectivity is here to stay and the 8500 is no different. The printer also supports direct printing technology, allowing users to print their images immediately. Additionally, the on-board LCD panel lets you preview the images before printing them out.

With the 8500, HP crams printer, scanner, fax and copier into one multifunction device that also happens to have Wi-Fi, all for an attractive price. It’s not often that you’ll find an inkjet multifunction printer aimed at the small and medium business segment, but HP’s managed to find a good balance of price, features and performance with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500.
